European visitors to Fulton's Windmill

The International Molinological Society (TIMS) board members were guests at de Immigrant windmill in Fulton, Illinois, on Monday, September 20. TIMS is the only organization devoted to milling on an international level.

TIMS board members were greeted with gifts at Fulton's windmill by Mayor Larry Russell and Chief Miller Ron Venema. Several other volunteer millers were on-hand to give tours of the windmill. Dinner was provided by the volunteer millers and was served at the bottom level of the windmill.

Following the meal, the public was invited to attend presentations about European mills. During the presentations, TIMS board president Willem van Bergen presented an enamel TIMS plaque to Chief Miller Ron Venema. Fulton's windmill is only the second mill to be awarded this plaque by the TIMS board. The other mill is located in Austria.

Board members were from Germany, England, Belgium, France, USA, and The Netherlands. The millers would like to thank all the volunteers who made the TIMS visit memorable and successful.

During the autumn meeting of TIMS Netherlands and Flanders on November 10, 2012, the I.J. de Kramer Prize 2012 was awarded to the Flemish author Frank Becuwe for his publication “In de ban van Ceres: klein- en grootmaalderijen in Vlaanderen (ca. 1850 – ca 1950)“

The prize amounting to € 2,000 was handed over by Peter Tergau, chairman of TIMS NL/VL.

Paul Bauters, TIMS member and dear mill friend has passed away on 13 May. In Flanders many mills have been put in the mourning position to remember Paul as the one who taught us our love for the mills, and who gave back to the mills their place in history and in the landscape.

Joanna Marx passed away unexpectedly on May 25. She has been a TIMS member for many years.

Her special interest in historical technology, engineering and industrial structures led to her involvement with Mostert’s Mill: she chairs the Friends of Mostert’s Mill (FoMM), a daughter of VASSA, established in 1993. She has been a member of the Mills Section of the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) (UK) for decades.

Our Greece members  Katerina Toutouza and Olga Lekou have made a fantastic TIMS Calendar 2012.
They have used superb drawings of Johan De Punt, made at the mill visits during the TIMS Symposium in Denmark.

On June 7, the Big Lift at the Little Chute Windmill took place. The Boldt Company, working closely with Dutch millwright Verbij from Hoogmade in the Netherlands, used a 300-ton crane to hoist the massive octagon frame into place atop the windmill’s base, followed by the cap, blades, tail structure and the main and long gussets. The ceremonial high point of the lift will then follow with the head structure (cap) and its flags being put into place on top of the octagon piece. Additional lifts will continue throughout the day as the Little Chute Windmill begins to take its final shape.

The windmill will start operating in July 2012 with the help of volunteer millers and the entire project is scheduled for completion in December 2012.
