When, in the beginning of the 19th century, the first incentives for industrialisation in Württemberg occurred, the river Neckar and its tributaries had already been providing the energy to run the mills serving the craftsmen in the city of Stuttgart and its surrounding towns and villages for many centuries. From then on the water power was used as a commodity and independent energy source to drive more modern facilities. “Stuttgarter Wasserkräfte und die Industrialisering im Mittleren Neckarraum” shows, district by district and mill by mill, how this structural change took place, and how the industrial landscape gradually changed in this decisive phase.
Additionally, related topics such as railway construction, timber rafting and shipping are dealt with in separate chapters. Some of these additional texts go beyond the Stuttgart region and the use of waterpower.
As such they complete the overall picture with aspects of a more broadly addressed history of the industrialisation.

Fifty years after De Zwaan was moved from Vinkel in The Netherlands to Holland, Michigan, US, TIMS member and certified lady miller Alisa Crawford dived into its history and wrote this excellent book. She describes how this project started and developed, and the determination and passion of those involved up to the present time. She also reveals unknown facts of the mill’s past in The Netherlands, and last but not least shares with the reader her personal dedication and love for the mill and its history. In English, paperback, richly illustrated in b&w and some colour pictures.

Available from www.in-deptheditions.com (America, price US$ 27.95) and www.bol.com (The Netherlands, price 27 Euro). A portion of proceeds supports De Zwaan.

All entries are explained in detail. When you read a book in German, this is definitely the book to have at hand for a quick search and explanation. This is a book about the village corn mill at Nootdorp, where I grew up. As a child, I knew this smock mill, originating from the nearby town of Delft, as disused and slowly falling into disrepair. How different things are nowadays! From 1986-1997 the mill was restored to working order. A group of volunteers, an official Society since 1998, now takes care of it, milling grain, receiving visitors and organising all sorts of activities. It is back in the centre of the community, and ready for the future too, (see my item on the possibility of a digital visit to the Windlust in E-News No 18 Spring 2015). In Dutch, hard cover, richly illustrated, mainly in colour.
